Here’s a look at why Australians are entering hospital for rehabilitation and palliative care and how long they’re staying.
Hospital admissions
- 2014-2015 10.2 million hospitalisations
Rehabilitation care accounted for:
- 1.7% (173,400) public hospitalisations and 8.8% (897,600) of patient days
- 7.4% (754,800) private hospitalisations and almost 14% (1,428,000) of patient days
Rehabilitation care
- 2010/11 to 2014/15 rehabilitation care saw a 4.4% increase in public hospitals and 12% increase in private hospitals per year
- 413, 000 hospitalisations, 75% in private hospitals
- Most common reason for rehabilitation care is osteoarthritis of the knee and hip
Palliative care
- 2010/11 to 2014/15 palliative care saw a 5.2% increase in public hospitals and 3.1% increase in private hospitals per year
- 41,000 hospitalisations for palliative care, 0.4% of hospitalisations
Length of stay
- 2014/15 average length of stay was generally higher for sub-acute and non-acute care (which includes rehabilitation and palliative care)
- Patients who spent at least 1 night in hospital for palliative care, 5.7 days were spent in public hospitals and 5.2 days were spent in private hospitals.
